BTC Trend Rider: A Bitcoin Trend Strategy With Volatility-Scaled Leverage

BTC Trend Rider is a long-only Bitcoin trend strategy, now available as a template in Arrow Algo. It waits in cash for a confirmed uptrend, buys it, adds to the position while the trend keeps proving itself, and sets its leverage from how volatile the market is. This post explains how it works, how we tested it, what the backtests show, and where it falls short.

What Does BTC Trend Rider Do?

The strategy trades the BTC-USDT perpetual on Binance, long only. Most of the time it holds nothing. It acts when the 4-hour chart shows a trend that is both real and strong:

When all of these line up it opens a position, and it keeps adding while they stay true. A trend that keeps going gets more capital. A trend that stalls gets closed quickly. A position that has not gained 5% within a set number of candles is closed, as is any position whose 4-hour trend turns down.

That shape matters. Most of the strategy’s entries are small probes that do not go anywhere. Nearly all of the profit comes from a few strong trends a year that it rides with several adds.

What Makes It Different?

Leverage that follows the market

Most leveraged strategies pick one number, say 5x, and use it in every market. The trouble is that 5x in a calm trend and 5x in a market swinging 7% a day are very different bets.

BTC Trend Rider sets leverage when it opens a position, based on Bitcoin’s average daily range: 5x in calm markets, stepping down to 2x when the market is wild. The leverage then stays fixed for that position until it closes, which is how a live exchange position works.

This was the single biggest improvement in our testing. Against the same strategy at a fixed 5x, it roughly halved the worst years. The worst calendar-year drawdown fell from 54% to about 20%, and the worst drop over 2021-2026 fell from 44% to 29%.

Two filters against buying the top

A trend strategy will always buy near recent highs; that is what following a trend means. We tested a dozen ways to spot a bad top before it happens. Most did not work: in a strong trend, stretched and overbought entries are usually the best ones, not the worst. Two signals did hold up in both of our test periods, and the strategy uses them:

Both affect only a small number of trades. They are refinements, not the engine.

How Did We Test It?

A backtest that looks good can still be curve-fitted, so we did more than run one.

Plenty of ideas did not survive. Buying at support levels with limit orders, fixed lower leverage, trend-based leverage, a 200-day trend filter, and blocking adds whenever RSI was high all failed. Each one either cut the strategy’s best trades or simply turned risk down without improving the trade-off.

PeriodBTC Trend RiderBuy and hold BTC
2021+26%+60%
2022-12%-64%
2023+149%+156%
2024+252%+121%
2025+11%-6%

Jun 2018 to Dec 2021+247% (max drawdown 48%)+530% (max drawdown 63%)

The pattern is consistent: it loses far less than Bitcoin in bad years, does about as well or better in good ones, and makes most of its money in strong trend years such as 2023 and 2024.

How to Get BTC Trend Rider (Free)

BTC Trend Rider is free. Open the Arrow Algo templates page, search for BTC Trend Rider, and clone it into your account. You can backtest it yourself over any period before deciding anything, and run it in demo mode first to see how it behaves in real time.

Because it is built from visual blocks, everything is open to inspect: the entry conditions, the leverage rule, the two top filters and the exits. You can change any of them and backtest your own version side by side.

Running it on another exchange

The template is set up for Binance, where it was designed and tested. Your clone can be switched to another supported futures exchange by changing the exchange on its blocks. We also tested it on Bybit, where it behaved much like it does on Binance: +49% over the last six months, against +56% on Binance.

Exchanges differ in price history, minimum order sizes, leverage limits and funding. Before you run a clone on a different exchange, backtest it there first and check that its orders actually fill.
