Crypto Market Update Monday October 5, 2026: Bitcoin at $86,060 (-0.54%)

This Monday crypto market update opens with Bitcoin at $86,060, down 0.54% since the daily open. The weekend was rougher than that number suggests. Friday’s breakout failed at $87,219. Price dropped to $83,860 within hours. Then it spent the weekend grinding back. Sentiment has barely noticed. The alternative.me Fear & Greed Index reads 70, up from 65 yesterday. CoinMarketCap’s version sits at 68. Both remain in Greed.
Crypto Market Update: Key Movers Today
Ethereum trades at $2,717, down 0.37%. Its 7-day range is $2,651 to $2,777. The $2,750 breakout flagged on Friday did not hold. ETH is back in the middle of its range.
Cardano is the clear leader again. ADA is up 5.16% at $0.2731. It is up 11.38% over 24 hours. That is the third straight session where ADA has led the majors.
Solana is down 0.65% at $120.80. It is sitting right on the $120 level it reclaimed on Friday. XRP is down 0.18% at $1.518.
Stellar is down 1.03% at $0.2218. BNB is down 0.63% at $790.44.
The picture is narrow. One altcoin is running. Everything else is flat to slightly red against the daily open. CoinDesk describes it as a range-bound market with ADA as the outlier. On the structural side, nearly 1.5 million ETH is now queued to stake. The wait is around 25 days. Metaplanet added 1,000 BTC net in the third quarter and holds 44,000 BTC.
Macro Context: Jobs Miss Kills the October Hike, France Rattles Europe
The weak September jobs report is still driving rates. Payrolls rose just 29,000. Unemployment ticked up to 4.2%. CME FedWatch now prices only a 17% chance of an October hike, down from 36% a week ago. December is a different story. Markets put the odds of at least one more hike by year end near 88%, according to CNBC. The hike has been delayed, not cancelled.
Treasuries have calmed. The 10-year yield eased to 5.26% today. The 30-year sits at 5.61%. Both are off last week’s 24-year highs. The 2-year is at 4.82%.
Europe is the new stress point. French 10-year yields briefly crossed 5% last week, the highest since 2002. They sit near 4.91% today. The France-Germany spread has widened to 154 basis points. That is the widest since 2011. The euro hit a 17-month low. The CAC 40 opened down 0.86%. The dollar index pushed to 102.53, its highest since April 2025. A strong dollar is a headwind for Bitcoin.
Equities elsewhere are strong. The Nasdaq 100 closed at a record on Friday. Asia followed. The Nikkei is up 2.40% at 69,947. Taiwan gained 2.46%. Hong Kong slipped on property weakness. S&P 500 futures are up 0.73% at 7,723. Russell 2000 futures are up 0.94% at 2,833. The FTSE 100 is up 0.27% at 10,490.
Oil is mixed. Brent is up 0.31% at $102.57. WTI is down 0.81% at $90.37. Gold is up 0.64% at $4,189. Silver is the standout, up 3.76% at $62.23. USD/JPY is at 158.15.
What Does the Technical Picture Show?
Bitcoin’s 7-day range is $82,776 to $87,220. Price is up 3.1% over seven days. Today’s range so far is $85,412 to $86,999.
Friday’s post said a weekend hold above $85,650 would be a strong signal. It did not hold. Price broke straight through to $83,860. Around $433 million was liquidated in 24 hours. Longs took $322 million of that, roughly 74%, according to CryptoTimes.
Then the interesting part. The flush did not run. $83,860 held above the 7-day low. Buyers stepped in through Saturday and Sunday. Price is back above $85,650 as of this morning. A failed breakout that recovers its level within 48 hours is one thing. A failed breakout that keeps falling is another.
$87,220 is now a triple top. Three rejections at the same level make a break more significant if it comes. $85,650 has flipped from support to a level that has failed once and recovered. Treat it as contested.
Ethereum needs a daily close above $2,750 to revive the breakout. Below $2,700 the range low at $2,651 comes back into view.
What Algorithmic Traders Are Watching
- The leverage reset. Friday’s open interest build was flagged as fuel. It burned on Saturday. Funding has normalised. The next move will come from a cleaner positioning base.
- ETF flows stayed positive, barely. Spot Bitcoin ETFs took in $29.3 million on October 2. Ethereum ETFs saw $17.3 million out. Two inflow days in a row is a start, but the size is small. The ETF bid returns today after two days offline.
- The dollar. DXY at a 17-month high is the one macro input moving against Bitcoin. If France keeps pushing the euro lower, the dollar keeps rising. Strategies with a dollar filter will be cautious.
- ADA on its own. Three sessions of leadership in a flat market is a momentum signal. It is also the kind of narrow rally that reverses hard. Relative strength strategies will have it flagged either way.
- Weekend flush as data. The breakout failed, the stops ran, and price recovered. That is a textbook stop hunt pattern. Our guide to stop hunting covers the ATR-offset and close-confirmation rules that keep systematic traders out of the wick.
What Is the Market Outlook?
The near-term outlook is neutral with a bullish lean. The weekend test was harsher than hoped but the recovery was quick. Leverage has been cleared. Rates are easing. Sentiment is greedy but not extreme. The dollar is the main drag.
Levels to watch:
- Resistance: $86,999 (today’s high), then $87,220 (triple top). A daily close above $87,220 opens $88,000 and the low $90,000s.
- Support: $85,412 (today’s low), then $83,860 (weekend low). Below that, $82,776 is the 7-day low.
- This week: the ETF bid is back online. Fed minutes from the September meeting land midweek. French bond auctions and the euro are the wildcard for the dollar.
Systematic traders did not need to watch the weekend wick. Their stops were set before it. Their re-entry rules fired when the level recovered.
