Crypto Market Update Thursday October 8, 2026: Bitcoin at $82,636 (-0.82%)

Today’s crypto market update has Bitcoin at $82,636, down 0.82% since the daily open. That covers the Asia and Europe sessions only. US markets have not opened yet. Wednesday’s US session is the one that set the tone. Spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $484.9 million that day, their worst outflow since June, and Bitcoin fell 2.22%. This morning is a continuation at a slower pace. Sentiment is reacting. The alternative.me Fear & Greed Index has dropped to 64 from 71. CoinMarketCap’s version has slipped to 58, which puts it in Neutral for the first time in weeks.
Crypto Market Update: Key Movers Today
Ethereum trades at $2,543, down 1.23%. Today’s range is $2,528 to $2,587. The 7-day range is $2,528 to $2,777, so ETH is sitting on the low. It is down 6.1% over seven days. Spot Ether ETFs lost $160.9 million on Wednesday. That is seven consecutive sessions of outflows.
Solana is the weakest major. SOL is down 2.35% at $113.57. It is down 3.29% over 24 hours. The $120 level that held last week is now three sessions behind it.
Cardano is down 1.84% at $0.2508. XRP is down 1.43% at $1.401 and has lost the $1.40 handle intraday. BNB is down 1.20% at $763.21. Stellar is down 0.85% at $0.1987.
The news flow is quieter than the flows. CoinDesk reports that Samsung is integrating USDC for cross-border payments across 82 million Galaxy users. Greece is preparing a 10% capital gains tax on crypto, with gains under €500 exempt. Standard Chartered is expanding institutional custody to Singapore. Ethereum’s Glamsterdam test has reached 200 million gas per block after its upgrade.
Macro Context: Brent Tops $105 on Reports of Iran Strike Planning
Oil is the story again. Brent is up 4.76% at $104.97. WTI is up 4.94% at $92.64. Bloomberg reports that the White House has asked the Pentagon for strike options against Iran that could run before the midterm elections. The Atlantic broke the story. Yesterday’s tanker attacks were the prelude. This is the escalation.
Wall Street closed its first red session of October on Wednesday. The S&P 500 lost 0.3% to 7,798. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.2% to 27,539. The Dow fell 0.7% to 51,179. The averages finished well off their lows. A strong 10-year Treasury auction calmed the bond market into the close.
The Fed minutes did not help. Most participants at the September meeting judged that another hike would likely be appropriate by year end. Sixteen of the eighteen officials who submitted forecasts expected a further increase. The market still prices an October pause. CNBC notes the minutes give no signal on timing.
Bond yields are holding near their highs. The 10-year Treasury yield sits at 5.30%. The 30-year is at 5.69%. The 2-year has climbed to 4.82%.
Thursday is risk-off everywhere. The Nikkei 225 is down 1.42% at 69,042. It has lost the 70,000 level it crossed on Tuesday. The FTSE 100 is down 0.29% at 10,428. S&P 500 futures are down 0.22% at 7,802. Russell 2000 futures are down 1.31% at 2,793. Small caps are taking the stagflation worry hardest.
Gold is flat at $4,146. Silver is down 1.48% at $59.02. GBP/USD is down 0.50% at 1.320. USD/JPY is steady at 158.22.
What Does the Technical Picture Show?
Bitcoin’s 7-day range is $82,228 to $87,220. Price is down 2.6% over seven days. Today’s range so far is $82,228 to $83,521. The low is the 7-day low. It was set this morning.
Yesterday’s break of the range floor has not reversed. $83,186 was the previous 7-day low. Price closed below it and has not reclaimed it. $83,000 is now the first resistance. Above that, yesterday’s high at $85,598 and the $86,500 to $86,750 zone cap any bounce.
The support map below is dense. crypto.news flags a major liquidation cluster between $81,700 and $83,300. Price is inside it now. Large resting bids sit on Binance between $81,000 and $81,250. CoinDesk’s cost-basis support at $82,300 is being tested as this is written. Below $81,000, the next structural level is $80,000. FxPro describes a quick path there if $82,000 goes.
Further down, the levels being quoted are $75,000 and $72,000. Those are not near-term targets. They are where the next cohort of buyers would be underwater.
Ethereum has no support until the September low. $2,528 is today’s low. A daily close below $2,500 would put the whole September range back in play.
What Algorithmic Traders Are Watching
- The biggest ETF outflow since June. Spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $484.9 million on October 7, according to Farside data. BlackRock’s IBIT led with $207.7 million out. Fidelity’s FBTC lost $105.1 million. Ark’s ARKB lost $101.7 million. Grayscale’s GBTC lost $39.3 million. Bitwise’s BITB lost $27.6 million. Every major issuer saw redemptions. October’s month-to-date flow is now negative at $163.3 million after four positive sessions. That figure explains Wednesday’s drop, not this morning’s. Thursday’s flow data will not land until after the US close.
- Two flow signals have flipped at once. Bitcoin ETFs had their worst day in four months. Ether ETFs are on a seven-day losing streak. Strategies that use flow as a regime filter are now reading risk-off on both.
- Price is inside the liquidation cluster. $81,700 to $83,300 is where leveraged longs get closed by force. A push through $82,000 could trigger the same kind of one-hour cascade seen on Wednesday. Our guide to liquidation cascades covers how a systematic strategy handles those minutes.
- Oil above $105 with a strike headline pending. Crude, yields and the dollar moved together again. Any confirmation of Iran strikes would send Brent higher and risk assets lower. Strategies without an event filter are exposed.
- Sentiment is catching down. Fear & Greed has dropped seven points in a day. CoinMarketCap’s version has left Greed. Contrarian strategies that fade extremes have nothing to work with yet. The index is in the middle, not at an extreme.
What Is the Market Outlook?
The near-term outlook is bearish. The range floor broke yesterday. The retest failed. The largest holders of the ETFs sold on the break. Oil is giving the macro side a reason to keep selling.
Levels to watch:
- Support: $82,228 (today’s low and 7-day low), then $81,700 (top of the liquidation cluster) and $81,000 (Binance bids). Below that, $80,000.
- Resistance: $83,000, then $83,521 (today’s high). A daily close back above $83,200 would at least pause the slide. Reclaiming $85,600 is needed to call the break a failure.
- Today: ETF flow data for October 8. Whether the Iran strike reports are confirmed or denied. The 30-year Treasury auction.
Systematic traders are not calling the bottom. They have a rule for the cluster holding and a rule for it breaking. Both were tested on data that already includes days like this one.
