Crypto Market Update Wednesday October 7, 2026: Bitcoin at $83,654 (-2.22%)

This crypto market update opens with Bitcoin at $83,654, down 2.22% since the daily open. The triple top at $87,220 did not get a fourth test. Instead the range broke from the other side. A wave of Iranian attacks on tankers sent oil through $100 overnight. Crypto sold off with it. Sentiment has barely registered the move. The alternative.me Fear & Greed Index reads 71, down from 73. CoinMarketCap’s version is at 62. Both are still in Greed.
Crypto Market Update: Key Movers Today
Ethereum trades at $2,575, down 4.55%. Today’s range is $2,565 to $2,700. ETH has now lost the $2,700 level it held all week. The 7-day range is $2,565 to $2,777, and price is sitting at the bottom of it. ETH is down 4.1% over seven days.
Cardano’s four-day run is over. ADA is down 4.97% at $0.2541. It is down 8.60% over 24 hours. That is the worst reading among the majors. The relative strength leader of the last week is now the laggard.
Stellar is down 4.24% at $0.2031. XRP is down 3.50% at $1.445. Solana is down 2.91% at $117.19. It has given back the $120 level reclaimed last Friday. BNB is the most resilient major. It is down 1.64% at $766.75.
The selling was fast. CoinGlass data shows $403 million of leveraged long positions liquidated in a single hour as Bitcoin fell toward $83,800. Longs made up 97% of the forced selling in that window. Total liquidations across the market reached $547 million in 24 hours. That is a 235% jump on the previous day.
The news flow is mixed. CoinDesk reports that the US government moved more than $100 million in Bitcoin and BNB on Tuesday. No sale has been confirmed. Robinhood added $25 million of Bitcoin to its balance sheet. Pudgy Penguins’ Abstract network will shut down on December 15. That is the second major layer-2 closure in a week. Cardano has added token freezing and seizure tools for regulated issuers.
Macro Context: Oil Tops $100 as Tanker Attacks Escalate
Brent crude is up 1.68% at $102.27. WTI is up 1.00% at $90.33. Iran has stepped up drone and missile attacks on oil tankers in recent days. UK Maritime Trade Operations tracked at least nine attacks on commercial ships in the first week of October. The Hormuz proposal that was expected to calm things yesterday has not.
Equities have not noticed yet. The S&P 500 closed at a fresh record on Tuesday. The Nasdaq Composite did the same. Nvidia’s market value is approaching $6 trillion. Optimism around a nuclear power deal between Constellation Energy and Google’s parent Alphabet lifted the sector. S&P 500 futures are up 0.58% at 7,819 this morning. Earnings season starts next week.
Bond yields eased on Tuesday after Monday’s surge to a 2002 high. The 10-year Treasury yield sits at 5.31%. The 30-year is at 5.69%. The 2-year is at 4.82%. The 20-year is the highest point on the curve at 5.74%.
The Fed minutes land today at 2pm ET. The September meeting delivered a 25 basis point hike to 3.75% to 4.00%. That was the first hike since 2023, and the vote was 12 to 0. Markets want to know how many members wanted more. Admiral Markets notes that December hike odds are around 84%. October odds have collapsed to 20% from 51% a week ago.
Asia and Europe are lower. The Nikkei 225 is down 0.92% at 70,036. It is holding the 70,000 level it crossed yesterday, just. The FTSE 100 is down 0.72% at 10,466. Russell 2000 futures are down 0.59% at 2,830.
Gold is down 1.01% at $4,145. Silver is down 1.33% at $60.35. Metals are not acting as a haven this morning. USD/JPY is up at 158.38. GBP/USD is at 1.321.
What Does the Technical Picture Show?
Bitcoin’s 7-day range is $83,186 to $87,220. Price is flat over seven days. Today’s range so far is $83,442 to $85,598.
The structure has flipped since yesterday. Price was grinding toward the triple top. Now it is testing the range floor. The weekend low at $83,860 has broken. Today’s low at $83,442 is sitting on the 7-day low at $83,186. Below that is the October 1 low near $82,900.
CoinDesk’s cost-basis analysis puts the next support near $82,300. That is where a large cohort of recent buyers would go underwater. Resistance from the same model is at $88,000. Bitcoin’s recovery stalled just short of rescuing its last underwater cohort before this drop.
Above, $85,598 is today’s high. $86,000 to $86,265 is the zone price traded in for most of yesterday. A reclaim of that would make today’s drop a wick. Failure to reclaim it by the close confirms a lower high.
Ethereum has lost its range. $2,700 was support for a week. It is now resistance. $2,565 is today’s low and the 7-day low. A daily close below $2,550 opens the September lows.
What Algorithmic Traders Are Watching
- The ETF bid was positive before the drop. Spot Bitcoin ETFs posted a net inflow of $118.8 million on October 6, according to Farside data reported by KuCoin News. BlackRock’s IBIT took in $122.0 million. Morgan Stanley’s MSBT added $7.8 million. Grayscale’s BTC fund lost $11.0 million. That reverses Monday’s $89.8 million outflow. Today’s figure will show whether institutions bought this dip or stepped aside.
- Liquidation cascades are an event, not a signal. $403 million of longs in one hour is a forced-selling spike. Mean-reversion strategies treat that as an opportunity. Trend strategies treat it as noise until the close confirms. Our guide to liquidation cascades covers how to tell the two apart with visual blocks.
- Oil above $100 changes the correlation. Crude, bond yields and the dollar all rose together on the tanker news. Bitcoin fell with them. Strategies that assume crypto trades on its own flow are running the wrong model this week.
- Fed minutes at 2pm ET. A hawkish read pushes December odds toward certainty and the 10-year back toward 5.4%. Rates-sensitive strategies should expect a volatility spike into the US afternoon.
- Relative strength has rotated. ADA led for four days and is now the worst performer. A ranking-based strategy will have flipped out of it today. That is the system working. A discretionary trader is still holding and hoping.
What Is the Market Outlook?
The near-term outlook has shifted to bearish. The range held for two weeks. The floor is now under test with a macro driver behind the selling. Sentiment is still in Greed, which means the crowd has not repositioned. That is usually a reason for caution rather than comfort.
Levels to watch:
- Support: $83,442 (today’s low), then $83,186 (7-day low) and $82,300 (cost-basis support). Below that, $80,000 is the next structural level.
- Resistance: $85,598 (today’s high), then $86,265. A daily close back above $86,000 would neutralise the break.
- Today: Fed minutes at 2pm ET. ETF flow data for October 7. Any further tanker headlines out of Hormuz.
Systematic traders are not guessing whether $83,000 holds. They have a rule for the bounce and a rule for the break. Both were written before the tankers were hit.
